In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
 John McCrae

Today is the Remembrance day, the Armistice day or also the Poppy's day. Whatever its name it's the day to remember WW1, soldiers who felt for liberty but also to remember other wars than WW1.
It seems that as WW1 is about to be 100 years old, people think it's too old to be important but this war is really a great part of our history, and no war is too old to be remembered !

Very close to where we live we have Vimy (I posted last year about this Canadian place) and numerous military cemeteries.
But last Friday, despite an horrible weather, with Hubby we left Pas-de-Calais and went in the Somme, one hour driving, to see some of the most famous cemeteries.
I wanted to visit those places to pay a tribute today :)
There are so many places to be seen !!!! we only had the time to see 4 !

First stop at Beaumont Hamel -  Newfoundland memorial

Names of 820 Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in WW1

Second stop at Thiepval - British memorial

More than 72 000 British & South African men who fell on the Somme
On the road the Ulster memorial

Last stop Villers Bretonneux - Australian memorial

11 000 Australian soldiers names who have no known grave

I asked my Australian friends before leaving whether they had relatives buried there ...
We didn't found Jesse Willard (Kaye Grand father) but had a very special thought for him there :)

Another time we will go and pay a tribute to other countries.
the weather was so bad that the pictures are not always as I wanted them, but I really want to thank Super Half for these one he made and for the amazing work on them (don't you find some are  amazingly retouched ? :D)

My mojo for blogland, needles threads and fabrics disappeared a bit those last 3 weeks, but I promise I'll come back soon with stitches.

Before leaving... a last picture for Kate....sweetie...we even saw Nigel =D

  3. Thats very appreciative for visiting these places and remembering. India keeps away from wars but during WWs, it was under British regime so it was dragged into war out of slavery.

  6. Valerie, the pictures are awesome. I think they deserve respect no matter how many years have passed by but they lost their lives on war, they left families behind.
The places are gorgeous! I can imagine how peaceful it is to be there, thinking about all that happened.

  11. Thank you so much for looking for my grandfather, Valma. It means a lot to me that you would do so. Armistice Day is an important day for us here in Australia (although somewhat overshadowed by that other day - ANZAC Day (25th April) the day that the AIF landed at Gallipoli). I so enjoyed seeing all of the pics.
